iiP Programmes

The invest in play® programmes support children, their caregivers and teachers by providing the most current and culturally appropriate, research-based interventions that are easy to scale.

iiP parent programme

The iiP Core Parent Programme, Six Bricks for Kids model, outlines research-based strategies that help caregivers build a strong foundation for their child’s life. These include:

  • Play and positive attention to create solid parent-child relationships and trust.
  • Support for children’s learning, emotional and social skills.
  • Caring boundaries that create a predictable and safe framework for children to thrive.
  • Self-regulation strategies for caregivers and children.

The 12-session iiP programme can be delivered in groups or with individual families in prevention or treatment contexts for parents of children aged 2-12 years. The strategies in this core model build on 50 years of research on what works to support all children, both neurodiverse and neurotypical, including those with challenging behaviours, social difficulties, anxiety, ADHD and autism.

Facilitator training

iiP offers high quality 3-day trainings that prepare facilitators to deliver the iiP programme with parents. The training is appropriate for anyone working in mental health, social services, education, family support and other caring professions. You can book places on iiP trainings, masterclasses and supervision.

Culturally sensitive materials

Why start with the red brick

In families where children have challenging behaviours, it is easy to get into a negative pattern of corrections and “no´s” in the attempt to improve the child’s behaviour. This often leads to a stressful relationship between parents and children, and parents can feel frustrated and powerless. That is why we start with the Red Brick: Thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

We use this brick throughout the programme to build parental confidence and self-regulation because that is an important foundation for making positive change.

iiP teacher programme

Those who educate and care for children ages 2-12 have an awesome and daunting task. Educators are the people that children spend the most time with, outside of their nuclear families. They are expected to be responsible for student’s academic, social and emotional development as well as their physical health and safety.

Almost all teachers and educators enter the profession because they want to make a difference in children’s lives. And teachers do that, in multiple ways every day. It is also true that it’s often exhausting to try to meet all these needs, especially in under-resourced schools, with students who come to school with many needs. Consequently, rates of teacher burnout are high.

We are currently developing the iiP teacher programme. It will support teachers to use evidence-based strategies that increase children’s social emotional well-being in the classroom, following a Six Bricks for Kids model parallel to that used in the parent program. The teacher programme will also explore the teacher-child relationship with practical information on understanding children’s needs, wants, feelings, and behaviours. It will provide strategies that have been highly researched and are proven to work to create strong student-teacher bonds as well as set appropriate and safe limits so that children can learn and thrive. These approaches will strengthen the social community as a whole as well as provide insight into how to understand and respond to the needs of individual neurodiverse children.

We are ready to start co-creating the iiP teacher programme in countries that wants a cultural adapted programme for schools and kindergartens that is built on research, cost-effective and easy to implement.

Add-on modules

There are specific modules that augment the core programme with information about neurodiversity for parents of ADHD and autistic children. These modules have been co-created with much dialogue with specialists in the field and those with lived experience. The modules for parents of ADHD and autistic children acknowledge the challenges that these children and their families face but do not categorise these difficulties as behaviour problems or issues to “fix” in the children. Instead, parents receive psychoeducation and learn strategies to support their children’s emotion regulation, co-operation, and social skills, with a focus on also making environmental changes that will help match what their child needs.

The additional modules will help neurodivergent children to thrive by doing better at school, having more friendships and having improved emotional regulation.

The ADHD module

The purpose of the ADHD module is to increase the knowledge about ADHD and thereby help parents and caregivers understand their children better, in terms of the challenges and the benefits that ADHD can bring.
The ADHD module is a supplement to the iiP Core Parent Programme. It consists of:

  • ADHD booklet for parents and caregivers.
  • ADHD online videos for parents and caregivers.
  • One-day ADHD training for facilitators.
  • ADHD session guide for facilitators.
  • Additional ADHD programme videos.

The autism module

The autism module is currently being developed. We will provide more information as soon as the module is ready.

Co-creating iiP programmes in your country

To provide a culturally relevant programme across diverse audiences, invest in play offers to co-create iiP core parent programme materials with communities who wish to adopt the programme. These adaptations are created in response to community needs and may be based on language, nationality, racial, ethnic and cultural context. The same co-creation process is used to develop supplementary modules for neurodiverse audiences such as autistic people or people with ADHD.

Each culturally relevant version of the iiP programme will be made available to all of the iiP community. This allows providers who work with diverse clients to provide culturally relevant interventions to a broader range of families.

The co-creation process includes:

  • Translation and adaptation of written iiP programme materials.
  • Co-creation of iiP programme videos locally.
  • Training of professionals to deliver the iiP programme.
